Principal's Message

I acknowledge, with deep respect, the traditional custodians of this land, the mumirimina people and pay my respects to Elders past and present, to the Aboriginal people with us today and to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community who continue to care for Country. I stand for a future that profoundly respects and acknowledges Aboriginal perspectives, culture, language and history.
Our School Values
Our Commitment: In partnership with community, we provide a welcoming school of choice that inspires and supports all learners to succeed as connected, creative and curious thinkers.
Dear families,
As we come to the end of a busy and rewarding term, we would like to thank all students, families, and staff for their continued support and involvement. It has been a term full of steady progress and proud moments, from strong performances in chess championships to individual sporting achievements across various disciplines. These successes reflect the effort and commitment shown by our students and the encouragement they receive from home and school.
A massive congratulations to Will, Flynn, Noah, Harley, and Owen from our U12 Sea Hawks SEBA basketball team, who were crowned State Champions last weekend. The team triumphed in the U12 Shield Boys Division 2 Basketball Tasmania Championships held in Launceston, showcasing incredible teamwork and determination.
A special shout-out also goes to our U14 SEBA team, who competed gallantly the week prior. Your commitment and sportsmanship were truly commendable.
Yesterday’s Year 3–6 assembly was nothing short of magical, thanks to our primary choir, who absolutely sang the house down. Their performance was a joy to witness, and it’s been inspiring to see the choir grow in both numbers and confidence. We are incredibly fortunate to have such talented and passionate performers in our school community.
This term has seen a number of exciting highlights that have enriched our students’ learning and engagement beyond the classroom. The BEACON Carpark Initiative bringing together business and industry representatives to speak with our Year 8–10 students about career pathways and opportunities. The RYDA program also played a valuable role in supporting driver education, helping students build awareness and skills for safe and responsible driving. We also enjoyed the energy and community spirit of our Winter Fest event, which brought students, families, and staff together for a fun celebration of the season.
We are especially proud of the reading progress made this term, with many students showing increased confidence, fluency, and engagement. These gains reflect our ongoing commitment to improving literacy outcomes, which remains a key school priority. Through targeted support and consistent use of techniques such as repeated reading, students have made meaningful progress that will benefit their learning across all areas. Thank you to families and staff for helping to build a strong foundation for continued growth.
We wish everyone a wonderful holiday break full of fun, relaxation and valuable family time. We look forward to seeing our students Monday 13 October for an action-packed Term 4.

A reminder that our assembly days are changing in Term 4. Assemblies will move from Fridays to Wednesdays at the usual time of 12:50pm. They will be held in Week 4 and Week 7 of Term 4, and more information will be shared closer to the date about our end of year Christmas and Award Recognition Assembly.
Our Prep students recently enjoyed an excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre, where they engaged in a range of hands-on learning experiences. This was later shared at our End of Term Assembly through a presentation that included artwork and a collation of videos from the day. The hermit crabs seemed to be the main attraction.
As part of the physical education program, students have participated and thoroughly enjoyed Auskick sessions. These sessions provide a fun and active way to develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, and confidence through physical activity.
Daylight savings begins the middle weekend of the holidays. As our evenings become lighter, it can bring some challenges for young children. Consistent routines are important for children’s wellbeing and learning, and families can help ease the transition by keeping evening routines calm and predictable, and ensuring children continue to get enough rest.
We wish all our families a safe and happy holiday break. We hope it is a time of rest and enjoyment, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 4.

Meet the ECE teaching team

Role: Teacher Assistant in Kinder – Prep McIntrye and Speech
How long have you been at Sorell School? 9 years
Tell us something about yourself: I have four children that continue to keep me busy. My family and I went on a 7 week long road trip in 2017, from the bottom of Tasmania to the top of Australia (Cape York) and returned down the east coast. I have extreme ornithophobia (fear of birds).
Year 3–6 Campus
As we approach the end of Term 3, students have continued to follow their classroom routines to improve their learning outcomes. All Year 3-6 students participated in the Student Well-being and Engagement Survey recently which will provide valuable insights into the well-being of students at Sorell school. This data will be used to inform school strategies for planning student engagement and well-being strategies for 2026.
Year 6 students have commenced transitions to the Year 7 area in preparation for 2026. This entails students undertaking hub hangs in the Year 7 space, meeting key staff members and familiarising themselves with the space. This is invaluable to support students for a smoother transition into next year.
Winter sports have now finished with our last netball and football game held Friday 19 September against Rokeby Primary School. It was fantastic to see students demonstrating our school value of courage by taking on different roles within the team. I would like to congratulate all students who participated in Winter Sports this term for their outstanding sportsmanship while representing the school. A big shout out to Miss Dillon, Gus Kenny and Mr Mills for organising and running the teams through Winter Sports this year.
A couple of reminders to all students and parents, first is that sun smart hats are required to be worn in Term 4 for all students in Years 3–6. Can parents/carers please remind students to have their hat at school in Term 4. Secondly, the Sorell School Swimming Carnival will be run on Thursday 16f October at Clarence Pool which is the first week of Term 4. All parents/carers are welcome to attend and support their young person.
I hope everyone has a relaxing school holiday and we look forward to students returning for Term 4.

Year 7–8 Campus
Year 7 and 8 students are busily working to complete units of work and hand in assessment tasks across their subjects. In classrooms, this looks like students using an assessment rubric to complete a culminating task. An assessment rubric is a tool teachers use to clearly outline how a student’s work will be marked. It usually looks like a grid or table that:
- Lists the criteria (the aspects of the task being assessed)
- Shows the levels of achievement (e.g. above, at or approaching standard)
Each box in the rubric describes what achievement at that level looks like for that criterion. Students use an assessment rubric to help guide how they go about completing a task and what information to include. Teachers will also mark off the same rubric so students clearly know what standard they have achieved for each criteria assessed. This forms a solid basis for feedback conversations with students that they can apply to future learning tasks.
I am so impressed with students who are taking up opportunities to do extra-curricular activities in the past few weeks. We had a small but very dedicated contingent of Year 7 and 8 students who participated in the recent Inter High Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to Oliver, Payton, Leo, Sam, Sophie, Tyson, Phoebe, Eleanor, Liam and Poppy-Rose. Some of these students even raced in older age races to support the school! Outstanding effort. Also, a big thank you to our student volunteers who supported the running of the carnival. Year 7 and 8 students are also signing up in droves to the new Futsal competition that is being played on Fridays at lunch time. Soccer and Futsal is a growing sport at our school and it is very encouraging to see so much interest in it. Being active helps to regulate our bodies and our minds.
Finally, I would like to congratulate class 7B who won this term’s attendance incentive. They achieved a class percentage of 85. This collective effort has earned them an in-school reward – a pizza party! We will start a new attendance incentive at the beginning for Term 4 for all Year 7 and 8 classes. Remember, every school day matters.
Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing school holiday break.

On Thursday, Beacon Foundation presented ‘Car Park Tradies’ to Sorell School. This involved Spectran, Veolia, Neca, and Hutchinson Builders coming into school to chat with the students about their careers. This included explanation of what is required to undertake a certain job, the process of how the employee got to be in that position and how they use some of the equipment. Students even got to control the Veolia truck picking up rubbish!
In Year 10, students have been working hard to finalise all of the core work completing a practical report on rates of reactions, a statistic report on their chosen topic (crime rates, smoking and vaping or life expectancy) and a speech for English. It has been great to see the students engage in a more college style approach to learning. During the rates of reactions practical, students were expected to create an experiment which tested the rate of reactions. Some of the examples include vinegar and bicarb soda and elephant toothpaste and mentos in coke. Students collected data and will now complete a science report.

Swimming Carnival

Sorell sent a strong contingent of students to compete in the SHSSA Inter High Swimming Carnival. Some highlights were Payton Arnol volunteering to swim for another school that were short in a relay, Oliver Haywood swimming in EVERY Year 7 event and Cooper Tegg winning Div 1 Freestyle. Everyone showed amazing sportsmanship and all represented Sorell School with pride. Congratulations.
Year 11–12 Campus
We have had a busy couple of weeks in Years 11 & 12. On Friday 19 and Wednesday 24 September we were lucky enough to host farm tours for students from Rosetta Primary’s LIL program. They were shown all of our animals and given a tour to show all the things we do on a farm. Many thanks go to our Animal Care teacher Lynn for her efforts and to the students from our Year 9 & 10 classes that helped out in showing our visitors around.
We have also had our Year 11 & 12 VET students undertaking short courses with Shayne Jupp, who has run RSA and Barista courses for students to learn a few new skills. Our students have shown off their skills and earned valuable accreditation in the process.
Next term is a big one for us. VET suitability conversations are happening in weeks 5 and 6 of next term. Students will be contacted early next term with a time for their conversation so please make sure they have put their names down for their preferred VET course. Contact the TTC if you are unsure about your child’s enrolment or have any questions about 2026 enrolments.
